Usually when you see an unusual feature added to a table game, you will be paying extra for the novelty in the form of a higher than usual house edge. So it’s a real surprise to see that Double Bonus Spin Roulette actually has a lower house edge than normal roulette. In fact, it’s quite a bit lower than the double zero American roulette game.
The return to player percentage of this game is 98.06%, compared to only 94.74% on the normal American roulette version. Remember that a higher return to player percentage means a lower house edge, and better long-term results for you.
Double Bonus Spin Roulette Layout
This game was developed by industry leader IGT, and shows their usual polish in implementation. The wheel in this game differs from normal with the addition of a yellow slot. Whereas the normal American roulette wheel has the red and green main numbers plus green spaces for 0 and 00, this wheel adds a yellow space that initiates the game’s bonus feature.
To make it more likely to hit the bonus, the yellow slot is also larger than the other spaces, at 1.5X the size of the regular slots. In all, there are a total of 39 slots in this roulette wheel and one is larger than normal. Factoring in the extra size, the percentage chance of hitting the yellow space is 1.5/39.5 = 3.80%. For all the other numbers, the percentage is 1/39.5 = 2.53%.
The payouts remain the same as in a normal roulette game, except for the new options to bet on yellow, which pays 12X straight up plus potentially a big payout in the bonus round. More on that in a moment.
So far, it sounds more expensive than normal roulette. After all, the payouts are the same but the numbers are harder to hit now. The offsetting advantage comes with what happens when the ball lands in the yellow slot.
The Double Wheel Bonus
To activate the bonus, the ball needs to land in the yellow slot.
When that happens, the normal roulette wheel is replaced with a new one, which has not one but two sets of numbers around the outside of the slots. All your existing bets remain in play for the bonus spin.
So all your initial bets on numbers now have two chances of hitting on this spin. And once you factor in that benefit, the return on this game is quite a bit better than the comparable two-zero traditional wheel.
Betting on Yellow
You also have an option to make a bet on yellow in this game. If the yellow spot comes up, you immediately get paid at 12 to 1. And then, if the yellows hit during the bonus, the payoffs are big. If one yellow comes up on a bonus spin, you will collect 120 to 1. If both wheels land on yellow, it pays 1200 to 1!
But this is where novelty becomes expensive. Despite the lure of the big payoffs, a bet on yellow is expensive with a house edge of over 10%. By my calculations, it works out to an RTP (return to player) of 89.23%. So if you want to dabble with that one, keep your bets small.
If you are looking for a little extra excitement in your roulette play, you’ve found the right game. It even cuts the house edge by more than half! Just be careful of that tempting big payout for betting on yellow, as it comes at a hefty cost.
